Hi again will a 400 fit into my 1981 F-150 with a 4 speed trany it does have a 300 straight 6 in it now but i want to replace the motor. If I can do that how much work is invovled in the swap ? One more thing is a 400 a small block and is it better than a 351 w
The 351W would be an easier swap as it shares bellhousing patterns with the 300 and 302. The 400 shares bellousing pattern with the 351M, 460, and 429.
Are you scrounging around for something cheap to put in or are you gearing up to start looking, and want to know what's best? If you are going to be picky, then I would stick with looking for a 351w. A 302 will swap in as easy as the 351w.
You could put anything you find in there, but the amount of work and number of required parts increases.
It all depends on what you are using the truck for I also have a 1981 ford f150 and I would recommend that you use a 351M or 400 if you tow a lot or if it is just to drive use the 351W
