There are two locations, one visible, one hidden. They are both on the top right (passenger) side frame rail.
The visible VIN is located in the engine compartment. It can be anywhere between the firewall and radiator support but is most commonly found about inline with the alternator. The second, hidden VIN is under the cab usually about 8"-12" behind the front cab mount.
You'll need to clean the area pretty good to see the VIN, wire brush and degreaser help. Some VINs are stamped lightly and can be difficult to find and there is the occasional frame where the VIN wasn't stamped at all.
10-4. I will look. I got this problem. My shorty frame is rusted out pretty bad, my long frame is not. The cab on the shorty is in good shape, the cab on the long is not. See where I'm going with this. I'm in a dilema with the vin#s Do I swap cab #s? is it leagle? What can I do?
In most states the important VIN is the one stamped on the frame. The tag on the drivers door (Ford calls it a warranty plate not a VIN plate) doesn't carry legal standing because doors are not permanently affixed to the vehicle, they can, and quite often are changed out.
If you swap things around, use the title for the frame you are using and transfer the warranty plate. AMK Products in Winchester, VA and Kevin Marti, Marti Auto in Phoenix, AZ both carry the special rivets for the plates.
If you don't have the warranty plate or want a new federal cert sticker (on drivers door jam) Marti can reproduce them.

Ok, I looked on the frame where you said to. I found no vin# on forward part of frame. I will be removing the cab, so I will look there when I do.
The frame is suprisingly clean. I took a wire tooth brush and finished the clean up from core suport to cab. no #s.

It might still be there, just stamped very lightly, or you might have one of the frames that wasn't stamped.
When the cab is off, check for the hidden VIN under the cab.
Here's what the frame VINs look like
the first one is the hidden VIN. The forward cab mount is to the right. The second picture is the visible VIN. The spring/shock mount is to the left.
Roger that! That cab comes off I will be looking. I looked real good on forward part of frame. There are no numbers. Not even faint. I thank you for your imput.
