I have a 1979 f250 frame with a 69 crew cab on it. There is no vin in the window for the 69 and the Door is off of a different truck. Are there any other places the vin would be either on the frame or on the cab?
There is 1 on the stamped into the frame, i believe it is on the passenger side below the door, although im not 100% sure. ill see what i can find. do you have the title?
VIN location on frame<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
one is on the right side frame rail around the alt. the other is under the cab by the back cab mount. hope this helps. is it registered as a 1979 or 1969?
The VIN is stamped in two places on the frame. Both are on the top, right (passenger) side of the frame rail. The "public" VIN is located in the engine compartment, it can be anywhere from just behind the radiator support to just in front of the firewall. Like piperig78 said, the most common location is about inline with the alternator.
The "hidden" VIN is usually about 6"-8" behind the front cab mount.
In most states the official VIN is the one stamped on the frame and this is what is required to be on the title. The door mounted "VIN" (Ford refers to it as the warranty plate) has no legal standing when it comes to title issues, the doors (as you know) are too easy to change.
Windshield visible VIN's didn't happen in Ford trucks till the 80's.
I currently have 2 titles one for the cab and one for the frame. i will look on the frame rail and keep you posted.
The frame titlei s the one you will need. When you look for the vin on the frame rail get a wire brush or better yet a drill with a wire wheel to clean up the area .Most likley you wont see it without cleaning up the area

Apparently this is a state independent point. Here, they require you to title it by the # on the body. So its the one on the firewall usually, and barring that, the door one... Yes, this makes it interesting titling something with swapped doors that didn't get the doorplate moved too...
It also means i can put a 70s ford body on any other chassis, and its still legally a 70s ford truck..
Here's a couple pics of the "hidden" VIN. The 1st pic was taken from about where the front of the bed would be on the driver side. I am pointing at the VIN stamped in the frame. I have found it's usually under about where the passengers butt would be if they were sitting in the truck.
i had to crawl up into the pass wheelwell literally and sitting up I looked at the top of the framerail facing towards the hood...follow it all the way to the radiator support, and mine was literally right there...where the frame meets the rad support...maybe an inch or two back. I had to scrape and rub a long time for it to be visible
i used a wire wheel on a drill when i had the engine out and clip off and i did the front of the frame. The vin was about in line with the alt...maybe a bit forward.
yeah - don't worry about damaging the VIN with a wire wheel. It's stamped in the frame and with how nasty the things get really nailing them with a wire brush/wheel is the only way to read the VIN sometimes.
As for the location of the front VIN on the frame - all of my trucks (the 5 I've taken the time to look at so far) have had it between the front cab mount and the shock mount. Most are closer to the cab mount than the shock mount. People say it can be anywhere between the front cab mount and the radiator/core support mount though and based on your post above I guess that's the case.
ive heard it depends on where the guy that was doing the stamping got to it at and how far behind he might have been at the moment. i found my one exactly where the pictures point. yes, i had to wire wheel it to see it, because i couldnt find it at all with 30 years worth of crud on it. i would go with the 69 title because theres no emissions controls to have in place, although i think going with the frame vin would be the more permanent way of doing it./
I found something stamped into the frame under the cab on the passenger side frame rail just after the cab mount. I haven't hit with the wire wheel yet but I am affraid that it is so rusted that I still wont be able to see it. The truck spent most of its life right next to the ocean.
Where would it be on the cab other than the door.
