On the passenger side, top frame rail between the firewall and the radiator support, or under the passenger side compartment on the side (or so I'm told, I have not looked myself....)

The VIN is stamped on the pssenger rail. It can be found sometimes ahead of the engine mount, sometimes alongside or just behind the engine mount (perch), and some trucks have it under the cab. It tends to be rather faint, so you will need a wire brush to expose it well.
Is there some reason you cannot use the VIN off the warranty plate tag? I know some states check the frame vin on older vehicles.
