Window alignment and limp door handle?

I just replaced my drivers side door glass and now the window is extremely difficult to raise and or lower. Is there a trick to adjust the mechanism so it opens and closes more freely?
Additionally how does one repair a limp exterior door handle? Do they make Viagra for these?

You may need to lubricate the gears and spring on the assembly. Also, check for any bends in the regulator and any snags on the window run channel/felt.

As for the limp door handle, is it inside or outside? If it's outside, then a new spring should do it. If it's on the inside, then you'll need a new spring as well, but that is harder to find. However, the whole assembly could probably use a reconditioning to make sure everything is tight. The metal on the cams wears out over time.

I just went thru this on my door. Panelman is right, cleaning and greasing works wonders.

The high window effort is likely because the division channel is cocked or too far to the rear.

the door latch mechanism is metal on metal and there are some wear points that help to make the latch sloppy. we took mine apart, welded on some extra metal, ground it smooth and it def works better, handle stays more horizontal. there are pics on FTE somewhere on how to do it, you do have to pry open some tabs to inside the latch. i have a couple of pics but they don't show much. i can find them if nec. dick r.

I just rebuilt one latch recently for a guy in Europe.

There are tabs on the rear that hold the cams in place. By heating the tabs, they become slightly more pliable to bending, but there's still a chance of them breaking off.

Here's the unassembled latch mechanism.

Here are some of the wear areas.

Areas welded and ready for grinding.

Assembled. One bracket for the spring broke off, so I had to weld it in place and then weld in between on top of the spring. The tabs on the rear also broke off, so more welding was necessary. I figure that no one will be fixing it for the next 60 years.

Lastly, the spring for the inner door handle is usually broken off and requires replacement. I'm still trying to find a correct replacement spring. I have one from a car, but it doesn't fit, even though it's very close in design.

If anyone is in need of having their latch repaired, please contact me privately. Thanks.

Ilya,
What would you charge to do this to my door mechanism, since you are the man with the know how?

Excellent pics and discussion! Even better than Julie's, and no lectures!! This should be a sticky or something.

My inside door handle spring was also rattling around. One of the tabs holding the stationary part of the spring was also broken. I managed to weld the tab back on, but caught part of the spring in my arc. Made it work much better! I think that car part can be "made" to work.

BTW I believe the latch spring can be replaced with this one:

Ross,

I tried putting the car spring in place of the truck spring and couldn't get the cover to fit over the shaft and spring. The bend in the spring is too narrow.

There was a guy on eBay a month or two ago selling a bunch of these springs NOS. I failed to buy his inventory.

My pictures are kind of crappy (out of focus). I plan to take better photos and do an actual write up during the next repair. However, I don't plan to sell the "how-to".
