Hopefully the soot was dry. If it was wet/oily/greasy, that indicates an EGR cooler leak.

Seems odd that there would be soot in the weep holes. As you can see in that pic, they are outside the cork seal. I wonder if the valve was leaking? Either around the seal, or up through the servo?

Not sure. Maybe the valve was leaking around the main seal/gasket. I had to wipe a bunch of buildup from where it connected on the engine. The soot was not wet at all on the valve itself. Up under in the engine there was a tiny hint of it being damp where a bunch of buildup had occurred. Don't know if it was real old or something recent. I'll be keeping my eye on it. Might do another clean at the end of the year to see what it looks like now that I can start from scratch.
