Basis engine machining

I have a 390 fe motor that I am planning to rebuild.

So i am trying to figure out how much money i need to budget myself. Planning and pricing the hardware is the easy part. I am just wondering what is the basic machine work I should figure into my budget ? I realize this is going to change some what as I get my motor tore down and discover more possible problems.
I also realize each engine builder has their own different preference on what he thinks is important to do. I respect and appreciate all opinions. Thanks for any input.

Yes.. and it will also depend upon what they work on regularly, if the shop does mostly SBC motors then he's gonna want to machine everything because that's what all the crappy GM castings need, but who knows you may stumble on a guy that knows his Fords. Best to just start asking around to see what prices are like in your area, it can vary wildly from place to place but it wouldn't be out of line to spend $500-800 on machine work alone with a chunk of that going into the heads. Blocks are pretty much all the same, bore the cylinders, resize con rods, polish/grind crank, resurface the deck, and maybe allign bore the cam and crank but IMO that's the Chev problem that you don't often see on a blue oval block.

It's only been one day. Here's what I paid four years ago for a 351W

Vat & strip - 95.00
Magnaflux - 40.00
Bore .010 - 68.00
CK-10 power hone - 125.00
Valve job - 150.00
Surface heads - 125.00
Remove/replace cam bearings - 40.00
Grind crank .010 - 88.00
Balance - 175.00
Press on/off pistons - 48.00
Resize rods - 125.00

About $1,100 total. This shop is pricey, but less than two miles from my house. There's a budget house on the other side of town that might charge half that.

Things that might need machined. Block, bore and hone block, resize rods, balance crank, turn crank, align hone block, deck block, press rods on new pistons. Heads, mill, grind valves and seats ( make sure the machinest sets all the valve tip heights equal that is very important with a FE shaft mounted rocker set up )

I worked in/ run a machine shop for 17 years and I agree with Conanski.I'd say about $1000 Be sure and have them put new wrist pin bushings in.
