Vacuum lines

'82 F150 I-6. I've never messed with vacuum lines so am semi-lost. Haynes is useless for this. Tomorrow I plan on going through and just starting on one side of the engine compartment and replacing every vacuum line working to the other side. Like I said, I don't even know what most of them do, I'm just going to replace them all. I am going to go to the store tomorrow and buy some long pieces of hose and cut it to size as I work. Can someone tell me approx. how much and what sizes I need to buy? Sorry for the newb. question, but many thanks.

When I did mine, I think I got 25' of the 'standard' vacuum line, plus about 5 - 8 vacuum Ts for the junctions and stuff.

I don't remember the size, but the best way to do it would be to bring a piece of your old line down with you.

You'll love the difference in the way it runs when you're done.

I rarely advocate messing with the stock emissions but those systems can be a nightmare to get back to factory specs. Most of those vacuum breaks and delays, thermal switches ect. are no longer available. It was Detroit keeping the carburetor alive on an iron lung when they should have already been efi to meet federal emissions standards.

There should be an underhood sticker with your vehicles information on it near the radiator support.

Mine looks like this =>

The Vacuum line diagram is on the right side.

I have an 82 F100 with the I-6.

This should get you going. A close up of my vacuum diagram =>

And if the sticker is gone you are pretty much screwed to find the proper diagram. I've had volumes of diagrams and they were always vague at best. If you still have the calibration code on the valve cover you might be able to order the decal from Ford. That WAS the only way but now that it's older the availability is in doubt.

Bronco Vacuum lines.

Thank you for posting this picture guys. I am having trouble with locating a sticker on my 1982 ford bronco 300 straight 6 4 speed bull low. Going through issues with stalling on the highway and having to pull over randomly and restart it. Noticed a few vacuum hoses were burnt so I headed down to the NAPA we have here in Alberta and got a hold of 14 feet of the vacuum line. I know for sure the yellow the line is completely gone I hope this stops my issue.

Anyways, thanks again the Haynes manual I have doesn't have anything to do with vacuum lines.

Ja, the vacuum hoses diagrams vary from year to year (and California to not California, etc.). If the sticker under your hood is torn up or gone then your best bet would be to try and find a similar model at the junkyard to check against. Or search the web for "19xx F150 vacuum line diagram" or whatever and see what images come up.

It will likely cost a little more instead of purchasing one longer piece, but I have just gone to the parts store and opened the hood and removed one piece of vacuum line at a time and taken it inside. They can cut it to length and after installing that one, move to the next. Do be careful with any plastic Ts or fittings. You might take a razor blade [be careful!] and slit the old hose at the end to assist in removing it. Spit [for lubrication] on the end of the new section and gently twist it on the fitting.

I just noticed this thread originated in August of 2012. I hope this helps, jonothan [posted 11/29/2013], and welcome to the forum!
