help....speed limiter
I have a 94 4.0 ranger with a 5 speed and have come to hate the speed limiting feature. I live in Nevada and travel on roads where I wont see another automobile for 35 miles or more. When I want to get out and roll the damn limiter will kick in some where just under 100 mph, I feel that this could be disconnected in the transmission some how and heres why. When I leave the truck in 4th gear and let it roll up, the tach will go to 5K and pull the little truck to about 105 mph and then its tongue is hanging out, and when I shift to 5th the rpm is just over 3500 and the damn limiter kicks in and holds the ignition out until it drops below 3500 rpm. There has to be a like to the trans that tells the computer its in 5 and then it controls the ignition to under 3500.
If it were a speed thing, the truck would not go to 5 grand in 4th because the truck is running faster there in 4 than it will run in 5th.
Any thoughts on how to dissable the information getting to the computer that the manual transmission is in 5th?
Thanks!

View User's Gallery I've also read that you can pull the fuse that protects the gauges, which includes your speedometer. If your speedometer never reads 98 mph, your governor will never kick in. However, your dash will be dead.
In some other thread, someone posted the schematics for a speed governor hack. But it warns about not being for the novice electrician. You'll need a few parts from Radio Shack to do the fix.
I had the same concerns, but finally decided to go with a chip.

I have a question for you. If it is possible could you be able to get the schematics for me? Because I have done this kind of hack on a '89 camaro z28 so I thought this could be a good project for me for my '02 Ranger even though its alot different I would like to try instead of buying a computer chip. Thanks.
Funny story though, after I bought a Diablo chip for my '97 F150 (maybe a week and a half later) I decided to race my best friend in his '83 GMC Jimmy with a 400 SB...Needless to say, I won...but we both lost our licenses for 6 months :-)
Luckily, the sheriff only clocked me at 85...good thing he wasn't around a moment earlier
BTW, the Diablo chips are freakin' awesome!
