hi..stationed in germany...getting passed by opels...2000 ranger xlt 4.0 automatic speed limiter kicks in at 98 mph....need advise on how to stop the speed limiter...took truck in and got speed rated tires then went to a large german ford dealer and they said they can't/wouldn't kill the speed limiter...code on ecu is err1...don't really need more hp or change shifting patterns just want to diaable speed limiter....anyone have any ideas? thanks
To disable the speed limiter, you have to change the PROM (chip)
in the PCM. There are several manufacturers, Superchip, Diablo,
etc. The bad news, after you install one of these chips, you will
have to use premium fuel, due to the changes in the timing
profile.....
to just get rid of the speed limiter? i have read some of the other threads about the chips and i don't think i want to go that route...shouldn't they be able to just hook up a puter and disable the speed limiter?
I've also read that you can pull the fuse that protects the gauges, which includes your speedometer. If your speedometer never reads 98 mph, your governor will never kick in. However, your dash will be dead.
In some other thread, someone posted the schematics for a speed governor hack. But it warns about not being for the novice electrician. You'll need a few parts from Radio Shack to do the fix.
I had the same concerns, but finally decided to go with a chip.
You'll screw up the operation of the transmission if you do that, getting less performance, because the computer depends on the speed reading to handle shift points.
I'v got the same question about the speed limiter, well kinda. I want it gone for good, and want to know if a chip will do the trick? I don't have a ford I have a mazda b-4000 auto 2wd pickup, but I was told its almost the same as the ranger and its got a ford computer. What chip would I need? Any help would be appreciated
With the Ranger/Mazda/Explorer there is no guarantee the limiter is removed. Diablo's success rate with raising it is low and Superchips isn't much better. Additionally, Superchips only raises it by about 15 mph (when they can raise it at all)... if you want more they consider it custom code.
The B-series isn't just almost the same, its exactly the same except for a couple of minor styling differences and is made on the same assembly line as the Ranger (just as the Expedition and Navigator are).
What do u mean by custom code would this remove it the limiter? What about changing out the computer itself, or do all computers have a speed limiter? and one more thing if the ranger and the b-series are they same would that mean i could get parts for a ranger and they would more then likely fit mine, depending on the year of the ranger.
By custom code I mean there is a fee to raise it more than 15-20mph. By default that's how much they can raise it by. If yours isn't raised now then custom coding is not going to fix it. All Fords, except for some of the SVTs, have speed limiters.
Well I don't think it should be raised the way it is now cause I don't got anything no chip or nothin, its bone stock . I was going to get a chip, but if i can't get the limiter removed then would a whole new computer be the way to go to get it gone.
ok now i'm really confused u can't get rid of it with a chip or changing the computer, is it stuck there forever? the custom code how much more mph would i be able to get, i'm wanting to start going to the track and racing if i can get this fixed.
Could you please describe the two performance programs for the err1 ecu?.
(what are the differences between them?)
If I understand your email correctly you have already asked someone to
develop me a chip that will only kill the speed limiter...gotta tell you
though i'm a little worried you might just send me one of the regular chips
and tell me its the one that "only removes the speed limiter"
will it cost extra for the chip they make for an 87 octane program that
only removes the speed limiter?
the way i understand the Diablo chip i could get a two stage deal where i
can switch from regular stock performance to high performance mode....Is
there any chance to have my chip do the performance thing on one side and
the stock without the limiter on the other?
sorry if i come off as a ungratefull buthead....just want to be sure what
i'm getting.
