I'm told an E4OD will work. However, you have to use one from a 460, and I know for sure that the 460's flywheel sits almost 1/2" further aft than the flywheel on an M/400. Some have said the E4OD doesn't care about that difference and works just fine bolted on these engines, but I can't say as I've not tried it.
Tim has a kit to space the flywheel back for use on a ZF5 installation, so if I were doing an E4OD swap, and I certainly might, I'd use the spacer from that kit. Then you'd know the flywheel is where it should be and that means the torque converter is where it should be. However, you will then have to use a starter from a 460 since the flywheel has been moved to the 460's position.
Also, the "E" in E4OD means "electronic", and that means the tranny has to have a controller to tell it when to shift. Baughman makes such a controller but it costs about $800. But you get a 4-speed tranny with OD and a lock-up torque converter so your MPG will go up and your engine noise will go down.
