I have read several days hours at a time on forum. My 99 has 217,000 has a DP Tuner installed. Problem was starting with service engine soon light for about 10 miles then clears up and runs great. Before seems like on half cylinders. This morning took to guy to put on scanner and said only code shows,603. He asked, "you have a chip?" He thinks it is either the PCM or my DP Tuner? Any ideas are appreciated. Dave
I am going to pull PCM and Chip then put PCM in without chip and check that.
You need to find a guy with a better scanner. Your engine is not OBDII compliant, so no matter what all those folks tell you about 96 and newer vehicles, those cheapo scanners will not read your engine codes. It will however read the generic truck codes like P0603, which does indeed come from your DP Tuner.
However, the P0603 is not the cause of your CEL, nor is it the cause of your rough running truck. My first guess with a DP would have been you've got a P1211 code which really isn't that big a deal, but if you're saying the light is accompanied by a poorly running truck, then I'd guess a P1316 code.
Of course finding a PSD compatible scanner and finding out the exact code would make diagnostics a lot easier. Until then, grab yourself a multi-meter and read the first part of this thread to see if it doesn't sound like your problem. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...ck-shakes.html
Chris, Thanks for your response. Want you to know that I just read all 14 pages of the thread you sent. You have helped me before and I am a two time paying person and got the Tshirt to prove it! So do you suggest I forgo the taking out PCM and so forth and do the quarter trick and check the torque? I think I can do this. I am about 20 miles out of Post. Go camping at Lake Whitney at times. Go to church in Hillsboro when there off I35. Thanks for your assistance. Dave
I would skip messing with the PCM and at least ohm out the injector wiring first. The down side to intermittent problems is the meter may ohm it out within spec if you test it at a time when it's not acting up.
Getting the codes read would tell you more, but I've driven through Post before. Not much around there. You'd likely have to go into Lubbock to find someone with a capable code reader so the ohm test would be a quicker, easier test.
