Installing used DP Tuner. Good idea or not?

I'm wondering if there's any sense in trying to get a used DP Tuner set up from another 7.3 installed into my truck. The tunes are already programmed in there and I don't know if there will be any inherent compatibility issues regarding the likely difference in PCM codes and slight differences in engine mods.

Thanks for any good input or experience with this.

Make sure you get the pcm code for the truck that it came out of. Some pcm codes will work with others but I dont know which ones. Get that code and call Jody with your pcm code. He will be able to tell you if it will work. If not, just send it to him and have him reburn it for you. It's under a 100 bucks, think 50 or something like that.
Also, I would tell Jody everything you have installed on your truck....gauges are a must!
At the end though, you will not be disappointed with Jody's tunes

You need to get the pcm code from Your code and the pcm code from the truck You are getting it from. If the codes are the same it will work, If not You will have to send it back to DP for Him to change the pcm code to match Your truck. I bought a used tunner for My truck and then sent it to Dp to change the code. Still saved A couple of bones by doing this. You need to make sure the modes are the same also, if both trucks have stock injectors and stock turbo should work. Just check pcm code.

My truck is an early 99 and the truck it's coming out of is a 2001, so the turbos are different. Does this make a compatibility issue?

Actually, your turbo, injectors, tuning and HPOP are all different than an 01.
If you buy the used chip send it to Jody to have it reflashed with your correct PCM code BEFORE installing on your truck.

PCM's are completely different between 99 and 01. you will need to have it reburned to work correctly

I already have a newer pcm that I've sent to Jody and had it reburned with his 80 hp econo tune. Do I have all the bases covered here or is the difference in turbo and HPOP still issues that have to be dealt with?

Call Jody or send Him an email, He will get back to You with the correct answer. It cost $50 plus shipping to get it re-burned for Your truck. I would say go ahead and get it, send it to Jody for the re-burn. You want be sorry that You did. Since You re-burned Your PCM, I would talk to Him first just to make sure.

Drake,

What PCM do you have now and what is the PCM code that the used tuner is programmed for?

The used tuner is programmed for a 17 degree HPOP (2001) and your 15 Degree HPOP will most likely not be able to keep up in higher tunes that ask for more ICP. My 15 degree HPOP fell on it's as at the high end in 80E even though the tune was for a 15 degree pump. When I put in the Adrenaline then the high end was good

Robin,

I honestly forget what the code was on the PCM I sent to Jody to re-burn and I don't know the code of the PCM the tuner has come off of yet. I'm calling Jody tomorrow to discuss this with him. You may very well be correct regarding the HPOP issue. I'll post here when I find out an answer.

Just giving Jody your VIN number off your truck he can tell what PCM you have in your truck, not to mention the info he already has with your previous purchase of that flash. Thats what I gave him when I got my DP tunes.

Well, talked to Jody at DP today and he said this tuner would run just fine with my truck. He said the differences in the oil pump, turbo, and injectors would not be an issue at all. The only thing he mentioned was that without an aftermarket HPOP, the truck would fall on it's face on the higher end of the 140hp tunes. Anyway, I went ahead and bought the tuner and I guess I may be in the market for an upgraded HPOP sometime in the future.

I still stand by my experience with the 15° pump in 80E, but that was 2 years ago and his tunes have changed since. I guess you will find out. Let us know.
