Went to start my truck today and it acted like the neutral saftey switch had gone out... Jumped the solenoid started right up, ran to the store, and came back and the damn thing wouldnt shut off... had to choke out the engine by covering up the intake inlets. Took off the covers and watched it work by twisting the cylinder the knubbed part the lock and key going into. What does that acuate and how do I replace it, because im betting thats the issue.
Alright pulled the ignition switch off and actuated my self and found out the tumbler is not moving in conjuction with the slide (plastic piece that actuates the ignition switch from the tumbler) It will push it out but not return with the key when you go from start to off leaving the power to the truck to the on. Is it spring return or something else? Heres the other catch, the ignition switch when pushed to the start position by hand ( the little aluminum pin sticking out of the ignition switch) it doesnt start either. Is that because the pin grounds out on something?
Mine gives power and will turn off the truck but won't start it. Have to jump the solenoid. Also my back up lights won't work since this issue started. If you find out what your issue is, mine might be the same or close. I've had a mechanic look at it and they couldn't figure it out. They were pointing towards my ignition switch ot neutral safety switch but who knows.
Well I had a very similar issue with my buddies 90 bronco... replaced the tumbler, and the ignition switch and it didnt change anything... Replaced the steering column with the one from my 90 f350 and it fixed the issue. With how basic the steering column is on that model of truck I cant even think about what it is... especially with how suddenly it happened. In his case he just got done muddin, in my case I didnt do anything but drive 3 miles down the road for groceries.
Alright on my 97 tilt column theres a little articulating plastic piece that the key turns change the position of the ignition switch... The joint in mine broke... And I have to remove the part of the column that is attached to the steering wheel. I just have no idea how to do that. So I unscrewed my ignition switch and am operating it by hand... which makes it very clear to me how easy it is to steal a ford truck since i can break into one with out causing too much of a fuss
