Engine Knock Noise

I own a 1997 5.4L expedition. I have experienced something which I think is a bit strange and since I am not that mechanically inclined I thought I would ask for some advice.

When I tow my boat, ( I live in Las Vegas, temps average 95-105) I can hear a knock or rattling sound coming from the drivers side of the engine. As soon as I unhook the trailer and drive without the boat, the sound goes away.

Any ideas as to why this only happens when I tow?

And how hot is the outside air temp?

Does it sound like gravel in the engine? I had that with my Slow-bra when the outside temp would get over 90.

it sounded like more of a rattling sound, the temp was around 100 degrees

Only when you're on the throttle under load? When you're off or going easy, no rattling?

actually I only noticed the noise when I got out of the car and it was idling; I rolled down the windows and tried to hear it when I was driving but I did not hear the noise, but I did feel a little loss of power.
