Got it done

Well it took long enough but I got the IP, injectors, glow plugs and return line done. Bad part is that I had to do the IP twice. First time, because its a van 86, I removed the gear cover for the pump. Got it in and it started but smoked real bad. I marked everything but still managed to get it installed a tooth off. Brought it to TDC removed cover and pump and started over. Lesson learned, easy way isn't always the best way. Now I have to find somebody who can fine turn it. Drove it little over a mile without the engine cover on, seems to have lots of power, just a little bit to clanky for me. I guess that means to far advanced. A couple of little hills by me to, it dose have more power then before.

I want to say thanks to all who replied to my posts for there help, and Typefour for his injectors and return line kit. I didn't know anything about these IDI diesels. Plus I'm a cancer surviber just out of treatment so energy is still quite low. Thanks and God bless,

Chet

The loud rattle may just be from the stronger pump and injectors, i would assume the higher pressures would make it louder. If you can see the scribed alignment marks on the pump, lining those up is generally within 1-2*

If you want to take a stab at timing it, Dave Sonaugle has a pretty good write up on how to time an IDI by ear. Basically "Powerstroke rattle" when cold with cold timing advance on (you can hot-wire it once the engine is warm to simulate it being cold), then rattle gone when warmed up (or hot-wire removed). Read his description in this post:

I don't want to start another heated debate over timing meter vs. timing by ear, I just thought I'd offer it as a "free" way to check out your timing and maybe you will be happy with it. Dave S swears by this method, because timing meters are dependent on the timing marks being correct, and he claims his is off by 3 degrees and knows of other owners who have experienced incorrect timing marks also. Read about it in this thread, note post #15...

Anyway, if you mark your pump position, you can always put it back, and Dave's method does not cost you anything to try... just sayin'...

Better to have it just slightly retarded, I cooked a set of GPs in under a year having the IP advanced a little too far.
