im looking to pick up a comp cams thumper cam for my 96 f-250 with a 5.8 in it. but the thing is i have no idea what lift or duration to get.i want it to come in around 2000rpm and end at about 5000rpm if thats even possible. can some one explain all of this to me?

You're going about this all wrong, you're assuming the engine would make power to 5000rpm with a simple cam change and nothing could be further from the truth.. the stock heads and intake are far too small for this displacement so the powerband you got to work with is 0 to maybe 4500rpm regardless. As for cams that work within those limits there are choices but what one you pick depends on the answer to question #1, and you can forget about the Thumper series they're designed for hotrod carb applications and not at all suitable for an EFI truck motor.
