another cam question

Alright i've been doing some reaserch and im on a really tight budget, i read a thread on hear or linked to this site. any way they did a cam comparison for the 351motor whih i have in my 96. they also said the 5.0 ho mustang cam was almost equivalant to the comp cam but i cant remember. my question is will the ho cam be a simple swap and will i gain any noticable power or am i better off saving for the comp cam?

Which Comp cam.. there are many.

The HO cam will give you more HP then the stock '96 truck cam but it won't quite match a Comp 35-349-8 or 35-320-8 for example.

The 96 roller cam is actually pretty good. The cam you run depends on what you are building for or where you want the power and torque. Let me generalize here. I like a cam with good low end RPM torque to get our a big, heavy, trucks moving and for haulin', towing, and wheeling. If you want to go fast, like a street truck or more of a pre-runner/desert type rig you would want good mid-range and high-end RPM power. You got to have the go fast parts like bigger heads, intake, and exhaust, and perhaps a higher stall torque converter to get the most out of high performance top end power cams. Those are the basic things to consider on cam choice and what you got to have. It's an art to many and you could get really deep into it.

Here are some Desktop Dyno 2000 Runs with Same engine 351W, GT40 heads, small tube headers, same intake flow and SEFI fuel injection. Note that DD2000 is optimistic by about 13%, so 400ftlbs becomes 348. Note that there is little improvement over the stock 96 roller cam and that the improvement for the comp cam is gained up high in the RPM range but some is sacrificed on the low end. Also note that all of these cam allow the engine to run with your stock computer with MAF.

On a budget, I would keep your cam, get some GT40 heads, headers, and better flowing muffler/exhaust. Then the intake is your biggest expense and restriction. The Edelbrock truck intake is good for low end torque while a Stang style is better for higher end power, to me the intake goes with the cam you choose.

Here is the GT40 HO cam and Cranes 2020, same build as above. They are almost opposites, though you can get a much more radical cam than the HO. There is some confusion in prior threads I have read. Yes, the HO is an improvement from a stock flat tappet cam, but wouldn't be my choice for a roller cam.

Compare 'em!

Hi
I don't know what your looking to do, or looking for, but have you considered a rear gear change? like 3:55s to 3:73 something in
that order.

Where do you want the power, lower end or higher end? It seems to me that lower effective gearing, taking in to account tire size, than stock gearing and a higher stall torque converter might favor the higher rpm cams. That's common in Mustangs but not typical for our rigs. We typically add larger harder to rotate tires with lower gearing.

So if I have overwhelmed you with cam crap, it's because I have been looking for a better cam myself in the last week or so............................

Then it will only make a small change if you go aftermarket.
