Maybe a dumb question, but what is a 'mild cam' exactly. The truck I bought had a rebuilt 460 and a mild cam was installed. What is it exactly and what are the benefits to using it, performance wise anyways. Thanks for the input.
A mild cam is one that has slightly larger lift with the same duration. There are some that reference an RV cam as well. Thats not much more then stock but plays around with the time when the valve opens or how long.
Any cam that is larger then stock will add some HP and TQ but don't expect to run 10 sec passes on the strip. Unless your driving a tube chassis or a really really light vehicle.
With a cam: The greater lift increases torque. Longer Duration equals more HP. RV so-called cams increase the lift for torque reasons. There is a fine line as to what cam to use. The cam needs to work with the rest of the engine to give you MAX PERFORMANCE. There are many variables in figuring for the right cam.
Check out the "how it works" website. They have a lot of basic info on cams that might be helpful for what you are looking for. Not to mention pretty much anything else car related.
