Gear selector indicator way off

This is on my 92 F-150. I guess it's the AOD tranny. anyways the the indicator that shows what gear it's in is off by one position.
When it's says the tranny is in reverse it's actually in nuetral. When it says it's in drive it's actually in 2nd and so on. Oh park is off the scale the needle is hidden by the edge of the guage.
I need to adjust it or figure out why it has now started this BS.
Any help on adjusting it, Pics would be awsome.
Thanks in advance

Should be a small "wheel" on the indicator cable if it's like everything else. ( mine is 5-speed so I haven't seen it on one of these)

This is the "official" instructions.

Remove the lower steering column shroud and look for the little plastic "wheel in a cage" cable adjuster on the right side.

Often the plastic is just old and brittle.
Can maybe be repaired if it is not missing pieces.

Well that seems easy enough. I thought it was going to be something on the transmission I was going to have to adjust.
I guess I'll see how easy it is tomorrow morning while it's cool out.

Most of the time it is the two screws at the bottom of the column. Just tighten them up and it should be OK.

I found a pale green plastic thing with a black plastic thumb screw adjuster. Some how the screw or hole was stripped as this thing was just hanging there.
I put a bigger self tapping screw in it to mount it again and then adjusted the cable as far as it will go. It is now at least near where it is supposed to be when selecting gears but the needle is still to the left of the correct position, and there is no more adjustment in the cable. so this tells me the cable is stretched.
Is there anyway to lose some of the slack?
Subford, I found those two bolts and they were tight.. By the way what is that ring with all the holes in it for?
Thanks guys for your help so far.

Not that I would recommend it, but I have seen them with a tiny zip tie around the cable itself. (kind of like an extension of the sheath)
That might get it back to where you can actually use the range of the adjuster.

It is the Suspension Height Sensor Control Ring AKA Steering Sensor.

Programmed Ride Control System
System Design
The programmed ride control (PRC) system is available on some Ford cars. Some import cars
have a similar system. The damping action of the front and rear struts and shocks is automatically
controlled by the PRC system to provide improved ride and handling characteristics under various
driving conditions. The main components in the PRC system are:
1. Steering sensor
2. Brake sensor
3. Speed sensor
4. Struts and shocks with electric actuators
5. Control module
6. Electronic engine control IV (EEC IV) powertrain control module (PCM)
7. Firm and plush shock relays
8. Mode select switch
9. Mode indicator light

The steering sensor is mounted on the steering column. This sensor contains a pair of lightemitting
diodes (LEDs) and a matching pair of photo diodes. A slotted disc attached to the steering shaft rotates between the LEDs and photo diodes when the steering wheel is turned. This disc contains 20 slots spaced at 9° intervals. A signal is sent from the steering sensor to the control module in relation to the amount and speed of steering wheel rotation.

This is not used on your truck.

This exact thing just happened to me a few weeks ago, both screws loose as could be. I was even having trouble starting it.

Retorqued these screws and everything is good again.

Well my remounting the adjuster and adjusting it the best that I could, lasted less than a day. It's back to where it was. Drive is just about on the R.
I guess I'm needing to replace the cable.
I have no idea what's on the other end of the cable.
Is this a dealer only thing or can I get it at the parts store?

I think LMC or NPD has them you just need to be sure you get the correct one. There is one for C6, one for AOD and one for E4OD. You have to remove the cluster bezel to get to it up top. There are two screws hidden under the trim "bars" above the AC registers, and if you have dual tanks be very careful removing the switch wiring, the switch mounting is pretty flimsy.

Well something in the gear selecter broke yesterday, I went from reverse to drive and all of a sudden the shift lever went limp.

I can see the parts way under the steering colum move when I move the lever around, but it all disappears behind this big aluminum bracket.

On top of all this mess my ignition cylinder broke. I could turn the chrome ear thing completely around without ever starting the engine. I couldn't put the key in, a day before this. Somehow eventually something would click and I could start the engine. Well just after my shift lever went limp was the final turn of the ear thing.
I bought a new cylinder, was showed how to put it in. I got the old one out easy enough, but putting the new one in proved a PITA.
I had everything lined up, slid it in and somehow it got stuck. it wouldn't go in or come out. I ended up breaking the new one, trying to get it out, so now I have to drill it out, as it is stuck in there good and tight.
