gear selection indicator is off

Wonder if anyone else had/having this problem and if you know a fix.

The gear selection indicator in my 05 Ex 6.0 is off - reverse is part way between P & R, Drive is just a fraction right of N.

If I select D (or O depending what you call it) I'm actually in 3rd gear. Seems like a mechanical problem rather than an electronic one, perhaps there is some adjustment to a cable or ??

Somewhat irritating, especially if I let someone else drive the truck.

Did you recently have any transmission work done? If so a lot of the installers don't line up/tighten the cable in the same spot. If not it might need an adjustment anyways. Down by the trans coming off the linkage arm you'll see the cable. There's a plastic tab that you have to lift up(be careful not to crack it) & you could make adjustment from there. You'll see the slotted lines, just move it a little at a time until you find the right spot.

Thanks for the info Freshman - I'll try that in the next few days as soon as I get a chance.

According to Oasis the previous owner had some work done by Ford on the transmission in Feb/07. If the problem showed up right away I imagine he would have complained - probably the cable has just stretched a little since and adjusting it will likely fix it easy.

Will let you know how it works out.

I have an 02 v-10, but I don't think it would be different. There is an adjusting wheel in the column. Just take off the fuse panel under the steering wheel, and on the ignition side of the column u should see a white adjusting wheel. When you adjust, make sure u put the lever through all positions to check. I had adjusted mine to far and had to go back.

Thanks guys!

Found the adjusting wheel under the steering column - on mine it is black, about 1/2" in diameter and almost center under the column.

It actually worked pretty good - now have reverse at R and drive/overdrive at O. Don't have park at P any more (now indicator does not reach the far left) but that bothers me much less. If it bothers me still I'll try the suggestion of Ford554 underneath the truck.

My gearshift is also kind of sloppy feeling, particularly in drive where it feels it wants to slide very easy to 3 - like there is not much of a stop bump between O and 3. That what you mean RacerX7775?

Zactly what mine is like. I replaced my cable about a year ago when it siezed. I think its an issue of the adjustment at the trans.
