I just completed fixing the steering shaft on my 73 f250 and had to disconnect the tranny linkage. After assembling everything back I'm getting panel lights but no starter. It behaves as if it is in gear but I double checked that the tranny linkage is in Park. Why is it not getting juice to the starter? The ground is fine. This truck is an automatic.
I narrowed it down. It was indeed the neutral safety switch. I don't understand how it works though. If I hold the bar in a certain position it will start in any gear. I don't understand how to reset it or if it just needs to be replaced.
There is an actuator pin fixed to the steering column. This pin works the switch inside the NSS. There are two screws on each side of the NSS. If you loosen the NSS, it has slack and can rotate side to side.
To set the switch, set the parking brake. Loosen the screws so that you can rotate the switch side to side and turn it all the way counter-clockwise. Turn the key to RUN and put the shifter in REVERSE. Have a friend watch your reverse lights. Slowly rotate the switch clockwise until your friend sees the lights go ON and mark that point. Keep rotating until your friend sees the lights go OFF and mark that point. Now rotate the switch slightly so that it's in the middle of the two points. Make sure the reverse lights are still ON, then bolt the switch back down. If it's set for REVERSE, it will be set for PARK too. Shut the key OFF and put the shifter back into park; the motor should start.
I don't have a pin coming off the steering column. Just the switch bolted on top with space under it to the shift tube. The switch has a bar that slides side to side. When I slide it over the truck will start but it is spring-loaded and sends the bar back to where the motor won't start.
