1996 7.3 just replaced pigtails that come out of the valve cover gasket because of a burnt terminal along with an internal harness. Engine running rough brought on me discoving the burnt terminal. After finishing installation I started it and ran just as bad. Checked cylinder temps at the manifold, right bank cold left bank hot. Checked connections all good check plugs and computer and the 40 pin found a little corrosion clean that up. Ran again still ran rough, checked ohms at the valve cover gasket, 3.2-3.8 on the right bank. Seems like at first start up for a very brief moment the engine is smooth then cuts out down to 4 cyl. Checked continuity of harness everything checked out. Im lost, any help?
Did you happen to look at the pins in the valve cover when you had it unplugged? If the pigtail needed to be replaced, the pins in the connector the pigtail plugged into are likely burned as well. It would be a good idea to check the wiring on the other side of that pass thru connector underneath the valve cover as well.
So what were the exact readings on each injector? I've seen a reading of about .5 ohms difference indicate a bad injector solenoid that will shut down the entire bank.
If 3 of the injectors ohm out very close and you've got one that's off, leave that injector unplugged, clear the codes and start it up. See if you can get it to start and run on 7 cylinders instead of 4.
2.8 ohm on all injectors. Got the problem chased to number one cylinder. Unplugged number 1 started and it ran on 7 instead of 4 cylinders. Switched a few wires to see if the problem followed wires and it did. Followed number 1 inj wire to idm. I'm gonna replace the wire and try that
Would I single injector short shut down a whole bank? I got about .9 ohm from the velve cover to the idm for number one inj
Yep, it could. If you have one bad injector, just don't forget the rest are probably not far behind. One of our sponsors is Jim at rosewood diesel, he does real good injector work at a good price.
Swapped solenoids, nothing changed. Found that right bank will only run on 3 cyl with one injector unplugged once I plug the forth in it cuts out. Got number one to fire but it has a fuel knock to it, so I'm probaly going to replace the injector or swap it and see if it follows.
