I have a 1996 f250 , 7.3 that use to run great. I have kept very good care of my truck for 14 yrs. Now truck starts great, but sounds like a choke comes on. Starting out goes ok then engine starts to bog down and smoke. A real lack of power , but if I push clutch in for 15 to 20 seconds and let the engine idle down it comes back to life like nothing was wrong. This happens a lot. I can get it up to speed on hwy, but it all of a sudden sounds and acts like choke opens. At same time electrical light comes on now until the engine rpm reaches around 1500 then goes off . I'm not a mechanic , and I love my truck but need ideas. Help!
EBPV is the Exhaust Back Pressure Valve, and 10 characters are needed to post in a thread...EBPV is on the bottom of the turbo...here are the results of a search on this problem.. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...archid=7481611 ...hth
Yep wait for the engine to cool. Then under the driver side of the turbo there is a two wire plug unplug it.
The purpose of the exhaust back pressure valve, which is a butterfly type valve, and is located on the exhaust side of the turbo just before the downpipe, is to help warm up the motor when it is cold out. It does this by restricting the exhaust flow which creates the whooshing or "choke" sound you hear. It uses information from the EOT (engine oil temp.) sensor, and i believe another sensor to control when it opens and closes.
Occasionally the valve malfunctions and will close itself when it should be open. One way to find out of this is your problem is to unplug the 2 pronged plug found below the intake side of the turbo down near the pedestal. Just unplug it and drive around for a while. It wont cause any problems, and it will not throw a CEL (check engine light). Many here have been running them unplugged for years, and many (me included) have totally removed the EBPV and plug.
This is most likey what you have going on. Theres also a slim chance that your up pipes are leaking and that sometimes makes a whooshing sound. Mine are bad again and i can hear exhaust leaking when i get on it, and it will stop when i come to a stop and put the clutch in. Just my $.02.
Welcome to FTE by the way! Lots of great guys on here and tons of good information. Theres also a search feature at the top og the page you can use to look for other threads where someone might have had the same issue.
