I bought a 99 crewcab 4x4 shortbed single rear wheel f350 v10 at the first of this year and can honestly say was somewhat disappointed in the performance. So I went on the hunt for the best thing to wake these things up. 5 Star's web site showed dyno's of 3 mods, programmer, y pipe and headers. I did all three at the same time and wow what a difference. it really pulls. I bought the programmer and Y pipe from Mike at 5 star and bought $100 headers off of ebay and they have worked well. Just remember the headers off of ebay require a little tweaking to get around the frame on the passenger side. Plus I had to weld in the EGR fitting as well. The more expensive ones fit better and come with the EGR fitting already attached.
Do the headers add much? I've got the tuner and Y pipe. I was going to wait until I had an exhaust manifold leak before I touched the exhaust manifold.
It is really hard for me to know since I did all three at the same time. I would think the headers make quite a difference expecially at high RPM's. The exhaust manifolds are terrible designs. It is like they took a heavy gauge pipe and brought everything into it. It is small and restrictive.
