Hey folks, brand new to this forum and it's certainly the most informative i've found. I'm looking for a good set of headers for my 99 F-250 superduty but it seems there isn't a really huge demand for V-10 headers and a pair from Banks are a bit on the pricey side for someone that isn't breaking the bank. Any suggestions would be more than welcome. Please keep in mind that my truck would still have to pass CA's lame smog laws.
I spent a lot of time researching in the forum. It appears that there are four headers that are popular:
ebay
Banks
Thorley (Recently discontinued)
Gibson
Gibson seems to be decent and the cost is reasonable. The ebay headers get mixed reviews some people say they crack or rust, some say they are great.
I am having Gibsons installed next week. They are "Shortys" so I will need to replace the "Y" pipe. This is the piece that attaches the headers to the exhaust.
The banks and I think Thorleys are "long" headers and replace the Y pipe.
Gibson and the Ford both shorty's seem to get good reviews on this site. I think it is the ebay shortys that they say you have to mod the frame on the right side for clearance, but not a big deal. Hedman and Thorley are both long tube and are available. Summit has both. They are a little more than the shortys. I just put my lift on this weekend and am starting to look at the long tubes for the performance. I already have the y pipe mod and tuner from 5star. Best money I have spent on the truck so far. Lots of header threads on the site if you search.
I have hedman on mine,I put hte ceramic one on,got them from summit for around $579.00.
found some fel-pro gaskets and did the install myself.some have said they are a little close to the tranny pan wich I agree with but have not noticed any temp rise on tranny.all in all great fit no cutting of frame, hardware that came with header I swapped out for stage 8 bolts havent had no flange bolts loosen or come out.Oh and the plus side is that the kit comes with it's own Y pipe to.for the price and fit and thick flange's is what sold me on these hedders.they also really helped out in the overall performance of my truck.less throttle pressure,I two 15'000-16'000lb of horse's and gear and the pulling power band is much more smoother with less tranny shift...Hope I did,nt blab to much just my 2cent's worth....
Good Lock with your search mate.................Cheers!
Since you don't want to spend Banks or Thorley money on headers your best bet IMO is to go with the Hedmans because of the long tube design and that they replace the stock y-pipe. Since you live in SoCal the fact that they are a steel header really isn't a concern unless you like to drive through saltwater. You only other choices are shorties.
As per Summits site regrading CARB approval.(You don't want to know my opinion regarding CARB)
"A - This header has been submitted to the California Air Resources Board for criteria and exemption approval. Pending approval, the E.O. number should be available soon."
