Tail lights doing some funky things...

I own a 2004 ford explorer, and my recent problem is that my tail/break lights are only partially working. On the left side the upper light works, working for breaking and turn signals. However, the lower light is not working. The right side has nearly the same issues, the bottom light does not work, yet the top only works in that it is on and shows turn signal, but not signaling break. I've experimented with new lights every which way and I've lost my manual to know where the fuse for all of it is. So what is this?

I am not sure how your lights are supposed to work. Some of the explorers had amber lights in the back along with the red. Do you have amber lenses or are they all red? And you said you have upper and lower. Are the upper and lower supposed to do the same thing? If one of them is amber, they are not.

If all your rear lights are red, all this co-ordination of the braking and turning is done in the steering column by the turnsignal switch. If you have amber lights, it's a little bit simpler.
