OK,it would give us a lot more room in the eng. bay with a single battery.I wondered if anybody has tried it and what battery they used?I found a yellow top Optima 900CCA and 1125CA.Any thoughts or experience?
The two batteries typically each have 700-950 CA, so I guess if you could find a single one that comes close to that, you'd be ok ... but good luck with that.
i doubt very much you will find a battery with the required 1800 CCA minimum you will need for a single battery setup.
that is why we have 2 batteries.
i'm not sure if an 8d would even have that much CCA. i have a 4d (2 inches narrower than the 8d) and its labeled 1000CCA, 1200CA. i don't use it for starting, so i can't speak to its performance there, but its quite a workhorse connected to my inverter
This may not be the cheapest solution, but it is viable.
Got a pair of DIY video's I pulled up in 30 seconds, there is likely more content out there. He is even doing it on a 87 F250 6.9L.
I'm still thinking about trying a single battery.I'm thinking if the starter and glow plugs are in good shape, battery with at least 900 cca might be OK.
Honestly in a perfect world, you would be fine. However with these older trucks that can be a bit of a pipe dream. I would just relocate the battery if space is that big of an issue, either fab it up yourself or get a kit.
Something like this would do it, obviously you should find one for your truck. JMB Performance & Powdercoat, LLC

it probably will be fine.
until it gets cold, and then you will be looking for an extra battery to help start it.
