I just spent several hours removing the mounting arm from the rear corner of my 49 F1 and now I'm ready to tackle that stuck drag link end cap. I've shot it with PB Blaster several times in the past weeks and tried to loosen it and it's still stuck. I've got a home made wrench of sorts that fits the slot nicely but it bent before the cap came loose. It's hard to believe this had a cotter key in it to keep it from coming out on it's own. Anyone have any tips to get these things apart.
A little heat may help make the crud somewhat fluid. Try tightening the cap a bit. Vibration as with an air hammer sometimes helps. A stronger wrench may be in order. Don't waller out the slot.
Like you I made a tool that fit the whole slot and intermittently applied heat and Mouse Milk over a couple days....was finally able to break it loose without damage.
When I worked as a teen at the service station in the heart of the rust belt we had to free stuck draglinks frequently. The tool we used was the hubcap pry end of an early style OEM lug wrench (the type that looks like a round bent crow bar with a socket wrench welded to one end that served as a hubcap remover, lug wrench and bumper jack handle) and a big pipe wrench to turn it with. Liberal application of heat and soaking with penetrating oil while still warm will also help. If you heat it to red hot, be sure to replace the spring inside afterwards.
