Idle Hours

The engine hours shows to be 209 and the engine idle shows 60. I never let my truck sit and idle but do a lot of town driving. This means that if I'm stopped at a light it is registering "Idle Hours" even though it is still in drive not park or neutral. This means you really wouldn't know the difference by looking at the recorded hours.

This is what my spreadsheet currently looks like for engine/idle hours

Low speed driving is still counted as idle. No one knows exactly what the magic number is for engine RPM or ground speed for it to be NOT considered idling.

Thanks, I see back in December your hours ratio was very close to what I'm seeing now. You must do a lot of town driving too?

As explained to me -

Idle hours are counted as more than just running in park.

Anytime the engine is running and -

-In park, regardless of engine rpm
-In neutral, regardless of rpm
-In drive/reverse with speed less than 25 rpm and rpm less than 1500 (or something close to 1500)

It's really pointless, the way these trucks count idle hours. I don't idle my truck much and my idle hours are 25% of running hours.

The question I have - Are the 'idle' hours additional to engine hours? Or is the idle hour count part of the engine hour count?

Say my truck has 100 engine hours and 25 idle hours. Is that 125 total hours or 75 running and 25 idle?

How I understand it...
It's 100 hours total and 25 of those 100 are idle but the engine was still burning fuel for 100 hours idle or not.

I was told any time it sees throttle position at 0 as in even if your going down hills with foot off accelerator it was counting this as idle. And I can dang near believe it because I live in country and don't see much idle, but my idle hours are way more than my stopped idle time .

See, we're back to still having no idea how this works.
Only way to get a good answer is from the engineers because the dealers don't know.

Idle hours are a subset of total engine operating hours.

That's 100 total hours and 25 of those are idling. Idling is still with the engine running so that will go up anytime it's not 0 RPM.

The idle hours is just another statistic (for us to make a discussion about lol).
The engine hours is counted inline with the way engine hours are counted for semis and tractors and generators and stuff.

There's going to be lots of idling in the winter months here so it is reflected by the count. In May I moved out of the city so that also shows a difference.

If it was like my tractor, it would be plenty useful (engine hours). Either the engine is running or not. That simple.

If a tractor is stationary and the PTO is being used to power a wood chipper, then those hours certainly count as engine hours or run time. If I used my truck's PTO option it would count as "idle hours". Am I right?
