Im looking for an inexpensive pair of fenderwells for my 74 250 4x4 with a 460. Can anyone give me a part number to look in to? Doesnt matter the brand. Called Hedman today and of course they recommended the most expensive set so i'm looking to those who have built on a budget and their experiences
Thanks
Of course thay are going to recommend the best, they are in the business to make MONEY.
I have a set of ol cheapo fenderwell exit Hedman's on my 4x4 79 351M easy install and real easy finishing the rest of the exhaust sys (straight pipe to stacks).
Its not a DD, its a mudder, so if yours is a DD and will see use in salty road/rusty ol WV maybe spend a little more to get a set that will last more that 2 or 3 years??
And get the thick header gaskets from JBG, header leaks will drive you
crazy. L&L has nice thick flanges and a pretty good rep but yea are a littel $$.
Old girl sees a little road use but mostly just out to play. I hear ya about the West Virginia rusty-ness, I'd kill for the L&L's but I dont think I can justify the price tag at the moment, maybe after I graduate next summer.
Hedman does make a set of fenderwells for the 460, they may make 2 or 3 if I'm not mistaken but then again thats the whole reason I'm asking haha.
If anyone else has any others like flowtech, etc please feel free to add
Not budget and not a F250, but I have a 460 in my 1/2 4x4 and used Hooker longtubes. Here's the deal, if you want something "cheap" most likely it will not fit and "cheap" will turn into "time and money" fixing them to fit your truck.
Check into the Hookers see what you can dig up.
FYI - I had to modify mine, but I think this was because of the truck being 1/2 ton and because the design was causing interferance to the front u-joint, but like I said I think that's a 1/2 ton issue not a 3/4 - 1ton issue.
my brother had to modify his hookers on his early 80's f150 too. they just seemed cheap.
Do you have a link to the hedman headers for the 4wd 70's trucks? I've never seen them and summit doesn't list any as fitting my truck. I'm searching google now but still not turning up anything but the usual 2wd ones.
yeah "cheap" isnt very appealing. I wasnt sure if there was a "walmart" brand out there that would be both cost effective and would work. I'll look into the hookers really quick but looks like I might have to settle for the L&L's... ohhh bummmer
When I called they gave me the part number for it and that was #85650 I believe. But if it was fenderwell wouldnt it not matter if it was 4x4 or 2wd? the headers bypass all the clearance issues caused by the 4x4 right?
I don't think so, the towers are different 2wd to 4wd so I'm not sure the motors are in the same place. The front crossmembers are different too, not 100% the frame widths are the same up front. I'm sure there is a reason they just say 2wd.
I have used different headers in different vehicles, and I have to say, hooker comp. headers are some of the best that I've used hands down... Don't know if there made for a 4x4 with a 460 thoughl...
Even the L&L can be crap. With my outboard set, one side was great but the other side was crappy. The welds were like not much more of a beginer did them and the outlet pointed down somewhat. If I wouldn't have been in such a hurry I'd have sent them back.
