Hi guys, I am new to this forum. I have a 1972 Ford f100, 3 on the tree. I was just wondering if it would be better to keep it there or to put it to the floor since I the exchange isn't to much doing.
The tube is the week link. When it get slack in the shifting it's time to replace it. If you go to a floor shift there not to many choises in shifters for the three speed. Stick with the stock shifter as long as u can.
If you like the column shift, fix what's worn out and keep it there. Many people like it as it leaves room for 3 on the bench seat.
Personally I hate column shifters and would change it out in a heartbeat. A GOOD hurst competition plus 3 spd shifter will work wonders. The cheapo $50 models will give you more headaches then the column shifter.
The tube is the weak link. When it get slack in the shifting it's time to replace it. .
How many shift tubes have you sold in relation to shift collars? The ratio is...at least, 100 shift collars replaced vs 1 shift tube!
The pot metal shift collar is the weak link, has an internal bridge that connects it to the shift tube. The bridge cracks apart, the shift lever flops around because the collar is no longer connected to the shift tube.
There no way the tube itself can get slack. The shift tube has a rectangular piece sweated on that the collar locks onto. This piece falls off the tube down inside the mast jacket. It can be welded back on.
On the bottom of the steering column underneath the hood are the two manual control selector levers that the rods from the trans attach to. In each lever is a rubber bushing and insulator.
The bushings age crack/disintigrate, the shift lever binds up between 1st and 2nd.
So, the bushings and the shift collar are the two major reasons that peeps install floor shifters, cuz they cannot find replacement parts.
How many would'ja like?
