Sort of new to FTE, been reading and watching for a while havent asked too many questions.. I have a 64 f100, 292, 3speed on the column. i would like to move it to the floor and have seen some universal shifter kits available. My question is: is this a hard thing do do? and are there any "tricks" involved.
Not really. Just remove the shift lever from the column and the linkages from the column to tranny.
Mock up the shifter assy (less the shift lever) and hold over the tail of the tranny where it will mount.
Mark the underside with a sharpie marker where the shifter will strick up through the floor.
Drill a hole large enough for the shifter to stick up through the hole.
Install the shift lever tempoarily with the boot.
Mark the outside of the boot retainer.
Remove the shifter, lever and boot.
Lay retaining ring back into the marks you made and mark the inside edges of the retianer on the floor.
Cut this part out and instll the shifter.
The best thing you can do is lubricate the assy with some good water resistant greae and keep it adjusted.
I have a Hurst Indy shifter on the floor of my 65 with a 3 speed. It works fairly well. I didn't do the install, so I have no technical knowledge to offer you but it does clear the bench seat nicely. PM me about your column shifter too if you would. I would like to move mine back up to the column. Good luck man!
I picked up a universial shifter (Mr. Gasket brand) from Kragens for about $60.00. Took less than 1 day to put it in following their instructions. If you have the clearance I'd use a jig saw with a good metal blade rather than the drill as they recommend. You'll get a better looking hole.
