I have a 93 Ranger xlt and after checking wheel cylinders and calipers first I have found a leak that is coming from the brake line or maybe the RABS module. The leak is up along the inside of the frame and I can't get in there because of the gas tank. Has anybody had to change line or RABS in that area and am I correct in thinking the gas tank has to come out to do anything in there.
Also, in the manual it says to plug the line as soon as you remove it(at wheel cylinders etc) so the fluid does not leak out of the RABS because it can't be bled without an expensive piece of equipment. Does anybody have feedback on this because I am pretty sure it probably emptied due to the leak location.
I have a 93 stx, last week I had the same leak you have, right behind the gas tank. However it was an easy fix, take the line off at the rear end where it connects to the rubber line, then with a small tubing cutter, cut it in front of the tank, where its straight. Cut a small section off, take it to the parts store, get a new line the same size, and with the same threaded end, get one thats 6ft long, put tape over one end and push it from the rear forward, screw it in the line at the back, cut it off even with the old line, use a steel line coupling to fasten them togather. Bleed all wheels, keep the mc full, and you're ready to go.
f5fordgirl is absolutely correct. There is no need to even remove the old brake line let alone the gas tank. You can cut the bad section of the old line with a tubing cutter and splice in a new piece (some states require a double flare when doing this, others allow compression fittings) or you can look for a factory joint and take it apart there. Make sure that you anchor the new line real good so it doesn't vibrate and/or chafe. I use lots of nylon zip ties and connect it to other lines and/or holes in the frame, etc. Be careful bending the new brake line, they kink very easily.
my '93 had the brake line going to the rear axle fail, i just slid new line behind the tank, double flared the ends and was good to go. when i had to do the fronts i used a compression fitting at the master cyl and its held up fine. didnt need any special tool because of abs on a '93. newer ones might be different.
