Hey guys... I'm new to this forum and am looking for a little help if possible.
My wife was driving my excursion down the interstate about a week ago and said it just shut off and she had to coast to the shoulder. After that it would no longer turn over. Starter just clicks when you turn the key. I towed it home. Charged the battery overnight and tried starting it. It soundined like it tried to turnover extremely.. Extremely.. Extremely slow. And then it just went back to clicking.
And hasn't done anything since. Tried to turn the engine with a breaker bar and she won't budge in either direction. I removed the starte thinking it was jammed but it was not the problem. About a week before it stopped the low oil pressure light came on and of and the gauge jumped from hight to low a couple of times and didn't do it again.
Should I think that my engine is dead or could it be another problem aside from letting my wife drive it!
try spinning the crank again with them out. it's normally pretty damn hard, if not impossible to crank over a motor with the sparkplugs installed
make sure you have a fully charged battery. Personally it sounds to me like the battery is dead. The starter makes a rapid clicking sound when the battery is dead, or near dead. That is usually preceded by slow cranking.
edit: another reason I think it's the battery is the way you described how it all started. Everything on these vehicles is electrically driven. A bad alternator and battery will quickly render the vehicle dead. Since it just coasted to a stop...well if the motor had fried itself, your wife would have known. The trans would have felt like it was in 1st gear while at highway speeds...not fun
If it turned over at all, I doubt it is locked up. Once I bought a 280z the gut thought was locked up and I pulled it with my truck a bit while it was in gear and it broke free. Of course it was a straight drive heh heh.
Take the belt off as well when you try to spin the motor. I have read of 2 cases both on here where the ac clutch siezed up causing the motor to not turn freely. I would also run a mechanical guage if the motor starts to verify oil pressure! Good luck!
