I am new here and wanted to say hello. I own a 74 f-100 with a 390 I have had it for 10+ years but its been in a barn for the last 6. I just got it over to my garage and will be working on restoring it. first I would like to hear it run again when I put it away I removed all the fuel in tank, carb and lines, disconected battery rolled up the windows and walked away.(was married she didn't like its looks, now divorced and want my truck again) any way I rolled the motor by hand a few times changed oil, flushed coolant, added gas, charged battery, checked other fluids and got in and hit the key and was anoyed to hear a loud buzz coming from the passenger side inner wheel well so I replaced the solinoid, same thing when I tried again. I walked around the truck and noticed the reverse light were on so I checked that it was in park it was, checked the shift linkage, put it up on jack stands and it is in park. this truck isn't smart enough to not start because of this is it? I love this truck and have for many years it was an uncle of mines before I bought it so it has been in the family since it was new(the assembly date is the same as my birthday). I really want to hear the dual exaust I put on it many years ago again, so if anybody has any ideas please help me out (I am pretty mechanicly inclined but this has been sitting for longer then I intended). I am going to pull the starter now. thanks for any help sincerly jeremy
Check all the battery connections.
Be sure you have a fully charged battery, clean the cable connections and make sure they are tight.
Did you replace the battery or just charge it? If you just charged it chances are the battery is bad and needs to be replaced.
Batteries don't do well when they are left without being fully charged.
If a battery sits it will eventually discharge and then start to "sulfate". Once that happens it won't hold a charge no matter how long you charge it.
