When I would be essentially at a stand still in that traffic, I would shift into first and just idle along until the gap in front really opened up and then I'd shift up a gear.
The van has sufficient torque to keep me going; I tried to pace myself and stay off the brakes.
I rather burn the gas idling along, than accelerating and stopping idling in place.
I figured overall I'd save on gas and wear & tear on my brakes.
Of course there was always the opportunist who would jump in front of me just to get one car-length ahead.
I do this in the tanker, it saves on shifting. And if the boneheads would pay attention instead of switching lanes because they see free space (Oooo that lane MUST be going faster, look at all the free space) the traffic would go faster. Yes by going slower we would speed up, it's the hammer down-slam on the brakes-cut off the guy next to you that slows us down.
No unfortunately the ranger remains untouched. They are working on repairing augers so we can drill again tomorrow. The choice was to work today and take Friday off, for a threeday weekend.
