87 300 distributor

Newbie to Ford's here, be gentle.....

I am dropping a 87 300 6 in my 67 shortbed. The engine, newly rebuilt, has an electronic ignition system, so I need to either buy a module or somehow get one to work with a coil etc.......

I saw a post about Duraspark and saw the diagram. Looks pretty expensive.

Anybody have a low buck alternative???

Thanks!
Greg

Which distributor do you have?

TfI has a small cap, and a square box with a bunch of wires hanging out. That needs a computer, and will probably not be an option for you.

DSII is a large two piece cap, has 2 wires coming out of the body of the distributor. This would be the one you would have a box on the inner fender.

A lot of people use this system, it works well, and gives you a good spark.

Most of the parts you would need can be gotten at the junk yard, for around $60, or less.

Another option, some people are using a GM HEI unit, wired into a DSII distributor. I was going to go with this set up, but never got around to it. I can dig up the wiring schematics if you want.

Summit sells a HEI with coil in cap for the V8's I'm not sure if they have one for the I 6 or not

That's the TFI distributor, you can't use it. You can use the 75 distributor with the gear off the 87. Is the rest of the DSII still in the truck?

We try to meet at least once a month if we can, here's where they're talking about for July

DSII is just ford's 1st truely electronic ignition.

Look closely at the gear, one is steel, one is bronze. If they are both the same, your good to go. Is there a small square, aluminum box on your driver's side inner fender?

Was this a running truck when you got it, or are you building it?

The truck is a 67 shortbed. The engine it came with was a 75 300 (by casting#) that had a hole in #3 that an elephant could walk thru. I bought the engine from Brandywine AP and had it rebuilt. They just used the block and crank. Everything else in new.
The body is in pretty good shape. The previous owner installed dual shocks on the front susp. and coil overs on the back in addition to the leafs. I dont know if he was a "moonshiner" but it sure looks like a clandestine runner!

Hey, Annie's footlong is the meeting spot. I may show up and shoot the breeze...

If it's a 67 truck with a 75 engine, we don't know if they used the 67 points dist in the 75 engine, or did they use the duraspark II system that came with the 75 engine in the 67 body. The engine was running before, so you can just use what it used before, even if it was a points distributor. It's your choice.
