Cruse Control Issues

Hey guys, I have been having an intermittent issue with my cruse control and I am wondering if anyone may have any thoughts. The cruse control on my 2007 F-350 will intermittently not disengage when I tap the brake pedal. It seems like it happens more frequently when I have our 9000lb travel trailer in tow. Not sure if it matters, but I have the integrated trailer braking system. I have searched the forum posts, the recalls and the TSB's that are listed and I have come up empty with answers. It has become so much of a problem, that I keep my thumb on the cruse control "off" button just in case.

If I were you I would take it to your ford garage and have them check the whole circuit over. Maybe even take your trailer there with you so the tech can expierence what you do first hand. This is for sure not something to mess with being a big safety issue.

Have you had any issues with shifting the transmission out of PARK? If so, I would just replace the brake pedal switch. You're likely disengaging the speed from the redundant pressure switch instead of the primary signalling switch.

I would have to ask "What the heck are you doing with the cruise on while towing a 9,000# trailer?", though.

Now that you mention it, I have been having trouble shifting from park. I simply chalked it up to grabbing the shift lever too quickly. Is it as simple as putting in a new switch (something that I could do in my driveway) or something that I should have the dealer do. I'm still covered under my extended warranty, so it would cost me $100 to have the dealer do it or I could for the cost of the switch. As far as towing with the cruse; when I'm on flat land, I usually tow with the cruse on. As long as it's not hunting for gears and heating up, I don't see any issues with it.

EDIT: I wasn't able to find a part listed on Horizon's website, but would this be that switch that you are referring to? Switch

That appears to be the same switch I replaced when my cruise didn't want to disengage. I believe it is called the Brake Pedal Position Sensor in the service manuals. There are actually two switches internally. One activates the brake lights, the other signals the PCM that you are braking, so it can disengage the cruise control, unlock the torque converter if necessary, and it supplies the signal to the shift interlock.

When it fails to signal the PCM, the cruise doesn't disengage until you press harder and activate the Brake Pressure Switch, which is on the master cylinder itself. The Brake Pressure Switch acts as a backup to the BPP sensor.

It's a bit of a bugger to get up in to. It attaches where the brake pedal connects to the master cylinder plunger. But I did it and I'm pretty big.

Thanks for the information David. I'm not sure follow you on it's location; Should I find the switch under the dash, near the brake pedal in the wire harness that comes off it or under the hood near the mater cylinder?

Should be a Motorcraft SW-5219, up on the top of the brake pedal under the dash. It's way up there.

Example: http://www.amazon.com/Motorcraft-SW5.../dp/B0011DU8CA

Just a quick update guys; after changing out the switch, my issues with the cruse control as well as the shift interlock have corrected themselves. Thanks to those that pointed me in the direction of the $12.00 part vs the $100 deductible of the dealer.
