Did any yrs have the 5spd trans? or all 4 spds? I'm just wondering if these changed from 4spds to 5 spds when they made the swap from 7.3L to 6L diesels
Even if a plug were to blow, one could limp the vehicle to a safe location. The engine will run albeit down one cylinder. Just be sure to unplug the fuel injector to the wounded cylinder.

Oh yea, no problem there.
When I launched one in my Lightning, I was doing errands in another town. I finished my running around then drove home on the freeway, about 15 minutes away.
Loud and obnoxious is about all ya have to endure.
I believe it was late 01 or early 02 when the heads changed for more plug threads. my X is a late 02 and it has the heads with more threads.
My buddy has a 99 Class A with a V-10 and it spit a plug on him while on the road. he carries an insert kit with him. he fixed it on the side of the road in 20 minutes.
In 2004 the Excursion got O2 sensors after the CAT. Can't chop the CAT off those later years. Well you can but it'll throw a code unless you do some magic.
I think there were changes to the Y-pipe along with the extra O2 sensors. I think the Y is a little more restrictive. My '00 was definitely more punchy, but I think that may be a 2WD vs 4WD thing.
My '04 EX is definitely quieter then the '00 was. I had some broken manifold studs on the '00, but I don't think it was leaking yet. Could just be more insulation between the XLT and EB too.
I think the PCV system may be a little different too.
i noticed the difference in the y-pipe on my old '00 compared to my '02 and '04. debated on taking the one off the 00 and putting it on the 02 but dunno if its worth it.
