I own a 1988 Econloine Clubwagon with a 351W 5.8L and my old boss gave me a 40 series Delta Flow flowmaster, it has a 3" inlet and 2.5 " dual outlets. He said it was too loud on his Chevy, but I thought that it sounded pretty damn good. My question is what will be the cheapest way to install it, without custom bending pipe. I was thinking about getting another stock tail pipe and running them side by side at the stock exit, but I would rather have them rear exiting. Money is a big factor for me and I also live in an apartment so I can't get real complicated with projects either.
There isn't a cost effective way, I always have a muffler shop do mine, the muffler is always the most expensive part of it, you have that, you could get it done for $100 at the right shop. I go at a 45 degree angle out the rear in the corners, not sharp out the side, yet not straight out the back to come in the rear windows or cover the object you're towing either. I love my Flowmaster 40 with the 3"x20" tips, the longer the better though, it changes the tone a bit, you can hear my exhaust from quite a distance away, has a muscle car sound.
Our 4x4 truck was done reusing the pipe that was on it, but rerouting a totally different way, and connecting to headers. I used the flexible pipe, but requires many exhaust hangers and clamps to get right, then you still have the threat of a leak, not safe for a van. The truck has some leaks, but it doesn't come in the cab, if it were a van, it'd linger enough underneath to find a way in though, my previous van dualled out the rear had no leaks but still came in the back doors, so you have to be careful.
