I have a '99 3.0L V6 Ford Ranger with an automatic transmission and the
engine seems to knock a lot. The engine knocks mostly when I climb hills.
These aren't huge hills either, just the typical hills you find in the Las
Vegas valley. It also knocks a lot when I try to accelerate. I use the 87
octane that the user manual recommends.
Is anybody else experiencing this knocking problem?
Does anybody have suggestions on how to limit the knocking?
I have yet to try anything to rectify this problem.
In my travels I recall seeing a TSB for knock/ping in the 3.0L; I think there is a new coil pack out with a higher voltage. I'm not sure if it applies to your rig but that's easy enough to determine.
You may also want to do a search for a company called Alldata. They offer TSB's and other service data to shops and the rest of us for a fee. However, they were kind enough to provide some online samples of their product which included mid 90's Rangers. Just get in there and look up TSB's on the subject for a 93+ Ranger with the 3.0 and the TSB will tell you what years it applies too
I had the same problem, usually knocked at highway speeds when accelerating. I tried running premium, worked, but was costly. Then i did a tune up, changed oil and filter, and the fuel filter, works great now. no knock, been like this for a while now. I would replace the fuel filter if i were you, worked for me with the 4.0 with 133k miles
