Question How you identify engine

I have access to a used lot of loose parts
for a 6.0L. The block, heads and turbo are not in the lot.
How do you tell what year they are from?

From the photos and I was able to call and talk to the guy that has the lot.
It was not his engine to start with.
What I see is the crank, cam, low pressure oil pump, valve covers, glow plugs,
several bags of small parts. some thing that looks like a windage tray and the lower half
of what looks like the main bearing caps, oil cooler and filter assembles, water pump,
front and rear covers, I can't tell it there is a HPOP, Lifters, intake manifold,
Not sure if there are any injectors. Some other odds and ends.
When I talked to the guy on the phone he said that the valve cover had a 06 date on it. But was not sure if it was all from the same engine. I will go have a look at it Monday.
Do the heads come with an upper bolt on part I see something that looks like
it goes under the valve cover on top of the head?

The heads have 2 diff size Head Alignment Dowels

18MM & 20MM

yes some of the head bolts go under valve cover but bottom head bolts are exposed

Sounds like someone did an overhaul and had a doner engine

Becareful some them parts might be Junk and they probably took all the good stuff

That is just what I was worried about. I wished I had the crank journal
sizes It's easy to measure.

the lower half of what looks like the main bearing caps. Thats called a bed plate and its lined bored to mate with the block it came from so its of no use.
The crank and cam I dont think I would buy either.
an extra front and rear cover may be worth having as will as valve covers. But I have only had to replace maybe 3 rear covers.
Front cover is were the lpop goes need to varifiy there is no damage to the inside were the pump gears run.
Dont think I would run a used oil pump or unknowen uned lifters either.
Buying the lot of parts listed is not really worth it imo.

My brother n/law has 2 f250 trucks with 6.0 in both that broke down and were out of warranty and he parked em both. I have grabbed the ficm,s out of both and the cats and a few other parts.
I am guessing they gotta be worth someting 05-06 they were complete till I got a hold of em. Have thought about pulling one out and keeping before he takes them to the wreckers. Right now they are doners for the rest of his fleet.lol kinda sad

mhatlen,
How did they die? I am looking for a motor that can be rebuilt. I should also ask if he would want to sell them.

Well I went today and had a look at the lot.
No HPOP, oil cooler cover, intake manifold.
Here is the post on Ford 6.0 diesel engine parts most brand new, one lot to many to list see pics | eBay
The price I had was lower than what you see here. I did not buy it
because of the items that were not included.

I don't know if this is a problem or not but I read somewhere that
you should not remove the bolt on section of the crank under
the dust shield and it was off. Also I did see some sings of
use on the journals not too bad.
But for what was there I felt it was too much even at the lower price he
had asked $500 not the $650 on Ebay.

He said they both had overheating problems. If your looking for the engines or transmissions:yea he will sell them, probably cheap. they both have around 100k on em.
As far as the trucks themselves they have become DONER vehichles for the rest of the fleet, someone smashes up something and it's getting yanked off of the two sitting.

There were 4 of them aquired through a purchace of a company 2 are still on the road last I heard. Maintanance is not his strong point, once they were out of warranty and they broke down he parked em!! If your interested let me know I can make a call, have to admit I have pulled a few parts off em myself ficm's glow plug controller egr valves cats otherwise thier complete. lol

Oh yea one is 05 other is 06 both f250 4X2 pressure wash company never pulled trailers hauled pump/steam cleaners

If I had to guess I bet they both have blown egr coolers maybe a head gasket issue but doubt it. Blocks are complete w/turbos
