So my truck has been down waiting for my John Wood trans. I went to start it the other day just to keep the cobwebs out of it and I couldn't find my keys. I have only ever had one key to my Excursion and since all Excursions have PATS, I haven't wanted to pony up the $ for a second one.
I was at the dealer the other day and asked my parts guy about replacement keys. According to him, since its over 10 years old, Ford doesn't have the records anymore.
Anyone else gone through this? Whats my next step?
And if you only have one key to your truck, go get another one made.
A well trained locksmith can impression new keys and program them but it's gonna cost you some bucks(less than a dealer though). I worked with a locksmith friend of mine for a short period when I was between jobs and it is amazing what they can do. He could have it done from scratch in about a half an hour. Your not paying him for his time but for his decades of knowledge and equipment it takes to do the job. For 2 programmed keys and service call your probably looking at $200 to $250.
One copied from the original and programmed would be less than a hundred(YMMV, especialy with luxury vehicles) so your advice to those with only one key to get another is very good advice.
If you can't find your key you can always buy a new ignition. My dad bought one for his truck after it was broken into and his keys were stolen.
Your still gonna have to have keys made to open doors, tail gate, lock the glove box etc, because the new lock and key won't match these. The non programmed keys don't cost as much as programmed keys but still...............
Don't now if the helps but I ordered a key for my 97 from my local dealer using the VIN. I had to have all my paper work showing that it was my truck. It took about 3-4 weeks for it to come in.

Went to another Ford dealer. Apparently, the original selling dealer "might" have the key code. I have a copy of my Oasis report somewhere. Gonna have to see if I can dig it up.
I called a locksmith and they want $388 if they come to me. $283 if I can have it towed to them...
Since I'm still waiting on my trans from John, I can keep looking.

You can program new keys with AE, but like you said you have to have the original.
I have not had to do it with Ford, but I had a 93 toyota pickup that I lost my key to last year and the dealer cut me a key same day from the VIN with proof of registration. I guess Ford doesn't retain records as long...?
