i just accuired a 302 engine from a '89 stang. anyway it has 99k miles on it, but i'm going to rebuild it. not sure if whole engine or jsut top-end. anyway, my ques. is this: is a worked 302 underpowered for a fullsize bronco? i like broncos, and i dont want to swap one into a broncoII(too lazy). i know the 302 came in fullsized versons. please can i have your opinion on this?

i have a 1990 XLT full size with a 302. it can takes hill with no problem and it has all the powerr it needs, but it won't win any races. The engine is big enough for getting around town and all, but its not fast. If your looking to be towing an huge trailer or boat up a lot of hills regularly or are planning to try to race any rice burner that you pull up to, go find a 351, but otherwise the 302 is all you need. Save some money on gas. oh and by the way if that 89 'stang had headers, you can swap them with the engine and that could save you some cash

Engines for cars were usually set up to have their power band at higher RPM's than truck engines. Lots of horsepower at 5000 - 6000 RPM isn't much good in a heavy vehicle like a Bronco. So I guess it depends on how you build the motor. If you build it for power in the lower RPM range, like say 1500 - 4500 RPM you should be OK. Maybe consider stroking it to something like a 331 or even 347, but I've heard those don't tend to last as long.

I used to drive an 86 Bronco with the EFI 302 and AOD tranny. I thought it was great; I got about 12 MPG or so on the highway, and it wasn't really a dog like some people might suggest. I had 31x10.5x15 tires on it and it was just fine. I pulled a boat with it up and down hills, I put a ton of highway miles on it between Austin and College Station, and I thought it was pretty acceptable. It sure didn't wind up as quickly as the 351W I have now does, but it was quite acceptable in my opinion.
