Engine swap questions

Hello all,

I have a 1983 Fullsize Bronco with a blown 302. Not too long ago, I found a 5.0 302 motor from a wrecked '88 Mustang that I think will bolt right in.
My problem is that I have never attempted a swap like this and I need to know what I'm up against. I know that I'll have to do some fabrication and mods to handle the "brain", etc. Will the existing wiring harness work with this new motor or am I in for one hell of a nightmare to do this?
Also, does antone have any opinions about using this kind of a motor in a Bronco? Would it be worth it? Thanks in advance.

Well as far as I know the frame blocks will work but you might need need to, if in good condision, reuse your old engine mounts from your blown 302 and put them on your 'Tang 302.
As for your "brain" issue goes, you might, don't quote me, but you might have to get the ECM or the Ignotion Contorl Modual from the Mustang or the ignotion system from the 'Tang as well as the 302, and the brackets.
AS well as changing the brains of your Bronco you would need to change the oil pan from a front sump to a rear sump 4WD oil pan.

All-n-all I would try to find a 302 of the same year or from a '80-'83 F-150/Bronco.
For future reference scence the full size Bronco is a half ton truck, the Bronco and the F-150 parts are interchangible just as long as they are the same year/ or body style as a rule of thumb.

I recon that you would have a much less and smaller headache if you find a 302 from the same year or at least, so the wiring should be the same, '80 to '83 or '84.

I had a 300 I-6 in my '84 Bronco and swaped to a 302....good choice.
Anyway good luck, I hope I helped you a lil bit.

why not upgrade to a 351w. same amount of work involved and you will get a good bump in torque. not to mention if you build the 351w with cam/intake/heads at some point it will really run.

I found the complete 5.0 motor I mentioned for $400. The only thing it doesn't have is the starter. I have a new starter on the current motor that will probably match right up.
Also on the 351W, I was told I'd have to change the tranny out if I upgraded. Is that true?

No need for another tranny with the 351, they use the same bolt pattern. The Stang motor is a good one to have.. it's LOTS more powerful than the truck motor. To use it with EFI you need the computer and engine wiring harness, a high pressure fuel pump, and a speed sensor input from either the rear end or tranny. If fabricating all this is a bit over your head, use the carb and intake from your blown 302(or upgrade them) on the stang 302, and sell the mustang parts for a profit or to finance the upgrade.
