Have any of you ever tried to relocate the fuel filter on these trucks? I cuss Ford every time I change it for locating it where they did. Why in gods name did they not move it 4" towards the fron of the truck? I'd love to relocate it with correct type of line if anyone has any ideas.
Great idea, every time I change the filter I think of wanting to relocate it...I remove the two outboard bolts to the tank steel shield, so that the shield hangs down giving room to do the filter.

Perhaps, using the fuel lines off a Longbed truck, on a Shortbed would be the trick?
The problem is in fitting new lines - these plastic lines require a special tool to insert the end pieces into the line. I tried and tried but I could not do it without the tool. Luckily I have a friend who works at a Ford dealer who let me borrow their tool and it went very smoothly. So before you take this on, make sure you have access to that tool. Then it's just a matter of making new fuel lines of the correct length.
How often do you change the fuel filter? Original Ford maintenance schedules say 15K on theses year models but up it to 30K on later models. I've pulled original fuel filters off of pickups with 100K on them. I'll do at least the 30K before changing one. I'm not a fan of the "underarm fuel wash" that's inevitable. I changed all of the filters on the 94 I just bought and it'll be years before I put 30K on it since it'll be a weekend driver for the most part. (I love company supplied vehicles! )
I change mine yearly reguardless of miles. My milage in a year is usually 10-20k depemding on my extras. I have had fuel pump problems before and to tell ya the truth I'd rather do that than change another fuel pump.

I just replaced the one on mine...
I found it easier to simple use a small hacksaw, cut the ends off the filter, and then pull the lines down and fight with them that way...This is for those filters that simply will NOT come off...
Otherwise, I've also used a dental pick set to slide the retainers out and VOILA! Issue resolved....Then clean the ends of the lines and replace the filter...
I've found if you push in on the lines, spray them out with brake clean, shoot in a bit of lubricant/penetrant of your choice, and use a quality disconnect tool they will come off pretty easily. I use the alloy tools and always keep a spare set of the fuel line internal clips handy.
I took a close look underneath the truck last night and came to the realization that the hoses are crimped onto the metal lines so simply shortening one and lengthening the other is out. My nex plan is to cut a 4" piece out of the metal line to the front of the truck and splice the same piece back into the rear line. I work in an industrial environment and have access to stainless steel compression fittings. I just need to verify th size of the line and go find the fittings.
