Small Engine Diagnostics Quiz

Single cylinder <strike>2</strike> 4 stroke gas powered engine

Customer Complaint:
- Engine was making strange, loud noises
- Engine was emitting smoke from exhaust
- Upon inspection oil was empty
- Customer replaced oil

Personal Observations:
- Large amount of oil around the base of the engine.
- Pull-start cord will not turn over the motor

*************

Feel free to ask questions to see if you can guess what happened.
My first hypothesis turned out to be right was right.

After a few trys, or if someone gets the answer, I will reveal how I came to my conclusion.

I'll take a W.A.G.

Customer put oil in crankcase of a motor that doesn't use oil in the crankcase. When they tried to start the motor, oil traveled up through the transfer ports and hydrolocked the piston.

Oil was added after internal parts became external?
That or they filled the oil to the top, locking the engine.

They thought it was a 2 stroke and added oil to the gas or they added gas where the oil goes

Sounds like he ran it dry of oil and seized the engine.

Answer:
Engine was ran without oil and started to seize. Connecting rod snapped, and cracked the block.

I came to my conclusion by removing the spark plug and inspecting the piston. I was able to push the piston down with a long drill bit. The pull start string would now move about 1/2 inch and push the piston back up, but could not pull the piston down. At this point I disassembled the engine from the machine and confirmed my diagnosis.
