Today on my home my ranger, 3 liter 2000, started making some awful engine noises. I pulled over and noticed oil leaking from the front of the engine somewhere. Oil was everywhere but in the motor. I refilled the oil and started it back up. The new oil leaked out as fast as I put it in when I started it. I couldnt really tell exactly where it was leaking from because it was dark and oil was all over everything. Any ideas guy? Im going to have it towed home and take a look tomorrow.
Thanks for the reply. I should have been more clear about where the leak appears to be coming from. It seems like its under the engine on the passenger side. Another thing I noticed was the oil gauge isnt registering.
clean all or most of the oil off the engine, put some oil it (cheap oil since it will come back out) and try to locate it. it should be easier to spot without all the old oil everywhere. Don't run it if the guage isnt registering or you will damage the engine.
It sounds like your oil pressure sending unit (switch) is leaking. It is screwed into the block behind the head on the passenger's side. You can get to it through the inner fender liner on the passenger's side.
Im going down to my garage now to try and fix it. I will pick up a oil pressure sensor switch from advanced. After I get the leak to stop I will have a shop check it out. Hopefully I didnt do any damage to the motor.
Thanks for all you help guys.
Well I found the oil leak. Somehow the front of the oil pan gasket came out of the pan. The front four bolt were loose. I managed to get the gasket back in there and tighten all the bolts back down. I filled it with oil but the damage was already done. The truck knocks very loudly, exhaust smokes, and there is no power. Looks like I need the motor rebuilt. Any of you guys ever had a 3.0 liter rebuit? What am I looking at for cost?
