So my 2006 6.0 F350 has an Edge tuner. Pulling my 5th wheel up hills it will start flashing a warning at 1300 degrees EGT. Why do I care? Am I in danger of melting something or blowing something up? 1300 degrees is hot to me but is it really all that hot to my exhaust manifold?
The sole purpose of the pyrometer is to tell you when your exhaust gasses are too hot. The temperature could be measured elsewhere but this is the easiest place to measure the temperatures coming out of the combustion chamber. And like mentioned above, aluminum, as in pistons, starts to change state at 1250 or so. Back out of the throttle or force a downshift to get rpm up or both. Whatever it takes to drop EGTs.
To be blunt, yes you are in danger of blowing the engine.
